Support Each Other
While the National Response is primarily focused on systems and policy changes to strengthen mental health and prevent suicide, it’s also critical for individuals to take action to support their own mental health as well as others who may be struggling. In fact, a recent Harris poll found that 90% of Americans would take action if they were worried about the mental health of someone they know. There are many ways to support each other as we grapple with pandemic-related challenges, from managing your own stress and anxiety to reaching out to someone you care about. Here are some practical tips for what to do – and what not to do – to support yourself and others.
- Recognize the risk factors and warning signs
- Learn the action steps for talking with someone who might be suicidal
- Stay socially connected and learn coping skills (learn more via Coping-19 campaign)
- Share the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (1-800-273-TALK), which provides 24/7, free, and confidential support, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741
Together, all Americans—and all sectors of society—can help promote mental wellness and suicide prevention, and encourage resilience.
